Guided walks with Cotswold Wardens near Stroud, July & August 2025
There are a number of warden-led walks coming up within easy reach of Stroud. There is no need to book and there is no charge for joining the walks. However, there is a box for a voluntary contribution towards materials for our work on footpath maintenance. Walks start usually at 10.00 am. & will return to the starting point. A packed lunch is advisable. Sadly, no dogs allowed, but dog walkers could find attractive self-guided walks on the website. Park: National Trust Haresfield Car Park at Shortwood near GL6 6PP (free to NT members)
Starting towards the viewpoint and Beacon with views across the Severn Vale towards the Forest of Dean and Wales. We then make our way round to Edge Common unimproved grasslands where orchids and butterflies flourish and we should get views over the Painswick valley. On our way back we will get views towards Stroud in the south.

Every month, the Cotswold Voluntary Wardens offer a five mile walk on the third Thursday starting at 10.30am from a café or pub, where there is an optional opportunity for refreshment at the end of the walk. This enchanting walk starts from one of the Cotswolds’ most charming and thriving small towns. It takes us through farmland, woodland tracks and rolling parkland from scarp top to valley bottom.

Route description Chavenage House and Beverston were occupied by opposing sides during the English Civil War: the Parliamentarians from Chavenage eventually seized Beverston Castle from the Royalists. Led by: Eric Brown, Start Address Barn Café at Chavenage House. Chavenage House is signposted from the A46 about 0.5 miles north of the intersection with the A4135 Tetbury –Dursley road.

Route description : Just under four miles and is a stile-free walk, largely on level ground.
Starting outside the Scout Hut on Old London Road, we walk to the viewpoint of Wotton Hill, before heading along the Cotswold escarpment through Westridge Woods to the Iron Age hillfort at Brackenbury Ditches. From there the route continues to the Tyndale Monument above North Nibley and the views down the Severn and across to the Forest of Dean and the Brecon Beacons. We return through the beech woods to Conygres Woods, finishing at the nature reserve on Old London Road that is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its rare plants.
